GREEK GOLD DIADEM WITH ATHLETE FLANKED BY ROSETTES Ca. 330 - 300 BC. A gold diadem of elongated leaf-shaped form, tapering symmetrically towards pointed terminals pierced for attachment. Hammered in repousse and finished with precise tooling, the centre is dominated by the frontal bust of a nude male athlete. His broad shoulders and muscular chest are modelled in high relief, and the face has a straight nose, firm mouth and wavy hair held by a fillet. Four six-petalled rosettes flank the figure, arranged in balanced pairs and decreasing towards the tips. Continuous beaded borders frame the composition. The frontal nude athlete and radiating rosettes belong to a distinctly Greek iconographic vocabulary, combining physical perfection with divine or aristocratic authority. The warm, lustrous gold and accomplished workmanship indicate an object of ceremonial prestige, probably made for an individual of elevated, possibly royal, status.
