HELLENISTIC AGATE CAMEO OF A RULER AS ZEUS AMMON IN GOLD RING. Ca. 300 - 100 BC. An agate cameo carved with the profile bust of a ruler depicted as Zeus Ammon, with a ram’s horn at the temple and a fillet tied at the back of the curly hair, set in a possibly later gold ring with a circular bezel and a tapering hoop with a central rib between shallow grooves. Size: D:20.17mm / US: 10 1/2 / UK: U 1/2; Weight: 20.6g Provenance: London private collection; ex UK ancient art collection; ex H. Cutting collection, Cambridge (1980s–early 2000s). The XRF analyses performed demonstrate that the compositional profile of the metal is consistent with, and technically compatible with, documented metallic compositions of objects from the attributed historical period, thereby providing substantial material support for the object’s authenticity.
