VERY HEAVY ROMAN CHALCEDONY INTAGLIO OF HADRIAN IN GOLD RING.
Ca. AD 117 - 138. A chalcedony intaglio with a profile portrait of Hadrian, carved with short, waved hair brushed forward, a pronounced nose, and a textured beard. The intaglio is set in a possibly later gold ring with a broad, rounded hoop, the shoulders and sides with paired horizontal grooves. For similar see: The Classical Art Research Centre, Record Number: 40004995. Size: D:18.75mm / US: 8 3/4 / UK: R; Weight: 24g Provenance: Private London collection; previously part of a long-standing private family collection assembled between the 1960s and 2000. The XRF analyses performed demonstrate that the compositional profile of the metal is consistent with, and technically compatible with, documented metallic compositions of objects from the attributed historical period, thereby providing substantial material support for the object’s authenticity. This item has been checked against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
