Description
François Frédéric Lemot (attributed to) Sleeping Ariadne, France, early 19th century 53 x 70 x 25 cm The sculpture, carved from white statuary marble with a Portoro marble plinth, depicts Ariadne asleep, reclining on a couch, her head tilted back and supported by her left hand, her right arm raised above her head. The figure is draped in a generous, classical-style drapery arranged in dense folds, which leaves the torso partially uncovered. The composition is derived from the famous Hellenistic prototype of the Sleeping Ariadne, known from the Roman version preserved in the Vatican Museums and long identified as Cleopatra. This model enjoyed considerable popularity in Italian sculptural production intended for European collectors between the 18th and 19th centuries.
