Description
Pair of urn-shaped knife boxes, England, early 19th century 70 x 20.5 cm at the base
Made of finely turned and carved mahogany, in a neoclassical urn shape, modelled on the designs of George Hepplewhite. Ovoid bodies with domed lids that lift via a central pivot mechanism, allowing access to the internal compartments designed to hold cutlery. The lids are embellished with carved bands featuring palmette and lanceolate leaf motifs, culminating in flame-shaped knobs. The lower section, richly decorated with foliage motifs, is joined to a turned leg resting on a quadrangular base. This style derives from English neoclassical designs of the last quarter of the 18th century, which were widely disseminated through the engravings published by A. Hepplewhite & Co. in *The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer’s Guide*, whose plate 39, in the 1794 edition, illustrates several examples of urn-shaped cutlery cases (vase-shaped knife cases). This pair is a reinterpretation of those models. Reference bibliography: A. Hepplewhite & Co., *The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer’s Guide*, London, 1794, plate 39 (for the type).
