Description
François I Dumont Portrait of the Duke of Reichstadt gouache on ivory 14 x 11 cm Signed ‘Dumont’ in the lower left-hand corner. A miniature depicting Napoleon François Joseph Charles Bonaparte (1811–1832), son of Napoleon I and Marie Louise of Austria, known as King of Rome and, from 1818, Duke of Reichstadt. The young prince is depicted in half-length portrait, with his arms crossed, in a white Austrian army uniform, with a high gilded collar, a sash around his waist and a sabre at his side. On his chest he wears the insignia of knighthood, emphasising his rank at the Habsburg court. The figure, set against a uniform grey-blue background, is rendered with the meticulous detail and delicate colour modulation characteristic of early nineteenth-century miniature painting. The work is accompanied by a CITES certificate. Framed.
