Description
ATTRIBUTED TO PIETER JACOBSZ VAN LAER (1599 – c. 1642)
The Boar Hunt
Inscribed in Cyrillic: ‘Dubliroval i restavriroval khudozhnik E. Sivers. St Petersburg, 1857’ [Relined and restored by the painter E. Siewers, St Petersburg, 1857] Edward Siewers was an assistant restorer at the Imperial Hermitage. In 1856, he was awarded the title of ‘class artist in watercolour painting’ by the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts (on the reverse)
oil on canvas
55 x 63 cm
Our painting bears a resemblance to a work by Pieter van Laer sold at Bonhams, New York, on 21 April 2009. Whilst the composition is very similar, several details distinguish our version, notably the rendering of the branches. A comparable composition is also held at the Brukenthal National Museum in Sibiu.
The Cyrillic inscription on the reverse of the canvas, attesting that the work was re-stretched and restored in 1857 at the Imperial Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, is a particularly remarkable feature. This early restoration, carried out at one of Russia’s most prestigious imperial institutions, suggests that the painting was already part of a leading collection by the mid-19th century.
