Description
116. CLAUDIO MARIANI: GOLD CROSS PENDANT, 1977
Cross-shaped, with geometric decoration, centred on a brilliant-cut diamond, signed and dated ‘Claudio Mariani 1977’, French import hallmark for 18-carat gold (750 ‰), dimensions 7 x 4 cm (including the bail), gross weight 27.89 g.
Claudio Mariani (born in 1936) was an Italian jewellery artist and goldsmith based in Pesaro. Originally trained as a sculptor, at the age of twenty-four he founded the goldsmithing department at the Scuola Mengaroni in Pesaro, where he taught for nearly two decades before devoting himself fully to his own workshop. Characterised by a distinctive use of semi-precious stones and themes such as waves and energy, his work was featured in the exhibition *Immaginazione Aurea* (Ancona, 2001), curated by Enrico Crispolti. Examples of his work are held in the collections of the Museo degli Argenti at the Palazzo Pitti in Florence.
