Description
170. ZOLOTAS: GOLD EAR CLIPS
Featuring an abstract openwork design with a hammered finish, signed Zolotas, bearing French import hallmarks for 18-carat gold (750 ‰), marked ‘K22’, length 2.3 cm, gross weight 26.2 g.
Founded in Athens in 1895 by Efthimios Zolotas, at the foot of the Acropolis, following an apprenticeship in Parisian workshops, the Zolotas firm became the jeweller to the Greek elite and, in 1910, created jewellery for the Greek royal family to mark the coronation of King George V. Under the leadership of Xenophon Zolotas, the founder’s son, the firm began collaborating with Greek archaeological museums in the early 1960s to reinterpret motifs from antiquity: lions, rams, meanders and laurel leaves became the hallmark of its designs. Based in Paris since the early 1970s, its clientele has included Maria Callas, Elizabeth Taylor and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
