Description
LARGE armorial wedding BUTTER MARK in turned and carved boxwood, with detachable turned beech handle. The crowned arms represent the marriage of Alfred Hingant de Saint-Maur and Eliane de Cargouët on 15 February 1870 in Lamballe. Certain noble Breton families had their coats of arms featured on the butter produced on their lands.
PAYS DE SAINT-BRIEUC, Penthièvre, dated 1870.
Diameter: 14.5 cm. Height: 20 cm. (Used condition, a few cracks, wood-eating insect holes on the handle, later handwritten markings in ink around the reverse).
