Description
CANON BOULET from the siege of Guingamp, 1591 A 27-pound "cast iron" gun reputed to have come from the attack by the Prince of Dombes' royal troops against the town, which was then in the hands of the Duke of Mercoeur's Ligueurs in May-June 1591. The people of Guingamp, betrayed, surrendered. Not content with paying a heavy price, the besieged were also held to ransom by the artillery officers of the royal army. The latter, considering that everything made of copper, bronze and bronze was theirs, demanded that the vanquished buy it back from them. (Source: @Info Bretagne, archives of the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours basilica). Diameter: approximately 15 cm. Provenance: collection of Baron M. de B., Manoir du Vally, Guingamp.
