Description
BLESSED JULIEN MAUNOIR (1606-1683), JESUIT PRIEST AND MISSIONARY.
Extremely rare autograph letter, dated 14 October 1660, signed "Julien Maunoir de la Compagnie de Jésus", addressed to Charles d'Acigné marquis de Kernabat, requesting payment of the sum of two hundred and fifty livres in the name of "Madame de Coutelan" "which Madame your companion had promised to have returned to him each year".
Julien Maunoir was a Jesuit priest, missionary and preacher in the Breton countryside in the 17th century, commonly known in his lifetime as "Tad Maner" in Breton (Father Maunoir). His work and memory were honoured by Catholics, who beatified him as the "Apostle of Brittany". He was beatified on 4 March 1951 by papal decree from Pope Pius XII, who made him a beatified man on 20 May 1951 and elevated him to the rank of protector of Brittany.
