Description
Jeanne MALIVEL (Loudéac, 1895 - Rennes, 1926)
Portrait of a young woman with a medallion, c. 1920-1921.
Pastel signed lower right.
The back of the sheet shows a charcoal sketch of a portrait of an old lady from Saint-Thois (Santoz, Bro Dardoup), in profile.
Height: 46.5 cm. Width: 36.5 cm. (Accidents, moth damage, adhesive tape on the back).
"This beautiful portrait is of a young friend of Jeanne Malivel from Lodeacia. After attending the Académie Julian and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the artist decided to leave the capital and settle permanently in Loudéac at the end of 1920. She turned to the applied arts, for which she would become renowned - not least thanks to her founding role in the Seiz Breur group from the start of the 1923 academic year onwards - but she nevertheless continued to portrait her family and friends. This rare portrait, particularly well done, is a dazzling testament to the talent of a protean artist". Olivier Levasseur.
