Le Porteur de raies, circa 1928.

Height : 37 cm. Length : 49 cm. Depth: 14 cm (Minor restoration to a corner of the base; some firing defects).
Provenance : private collection, Milan.
On 7 December 1928, Mathurin Méheut's solo exhibition "Mer et Forêt" opened at the prestigious Galerie Charpentier. It featured three hundred works, including thirty-five sculptures. Many of them were created at Sèvres during the year. Others came from the Henriot workshops in Quimper. One of these is Le Porteur de raies.
Created in 1928, this sculpture has a purity of line sublimated by the white monochrome, a novelty in Quimper. Méheut was a brilliant colourist, yet nothing was missing. Because this work is finished... From the heart! Let's listen to Michel Maubourg after the exhibition at the Galerie Charpentier: "These craftsmen (...) the painter of the sea (...) shows them in their characteristic attitudes, with the same accent of truth so sincere, and at the same time with the same affectionate understanding (...). Mathurin Méheut's work is brimming with emotion and love". As he puts it, his "meditative and passionate sensibility reveals itself".
And yet he has probably never heard Mathurin Méheut say: "From childhood, I was drawn to the ocean (...) I had to devote my life to it (...) I became attached to the workers of the sea, the fighters of the sea, to those who feel it so closely in their bodies that it gives them that inimitable allure and character".
