ARMEL BEAUFILS (Rennes, 1882 - Saint-Briac, 1952) Emile-Jean Armel-Beaufils known as
Bust of a little girl, circa 1920-1930

Height : 43 cm. Width : 36 cm. Depth : 24 cm.
"This feeling of life is exalted even more (when he) works on children's figures (...)". Armel Beaufils excels "in capturing the elusive, in fixing the most ephemeral, the most delicate moments of the being that is taking shape. And here are the busts of children (...). Before these models of grace and freshness, the artist (...) gives (...) the best of himself". (Marcel Mayer in L'Art et les artistes, 1934).
Female subjects, including portraits of little girls, were a particular area of interest for Armel Beaufils. The exhibition "Armel Beaufils: Le regard des femmes", held in 2017 in Saint-Briac, wonderfully highlighted this. Unlike several other charming little square-cut girls such as "Nicole" or "Topa", our model did not feature. The Musée de Rennes has a copy of "Mlle Lecourbe", which is similar to our little girl. The latter was sold at auction and then in a gallery in 2023, with an erroneous justification.
To the best of our knowledge, if it is not the only example, it is at least the only one known.
It may have been exhibited at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs Industriels et Modernes in Paris in 1925. Indeed, "La Stèle", a group of contemporary sculptors founded by Arthur Goldscheider, shared its own pavilion with craftsmen and decorators grouped under the name "Evolution".
