Description
Large FRAGMENT OF A CHILD'S SARCOPHAGE decorated in high relief with a scene depicting ten banking toddlers in various attitudes. Two are lying on a bench in front of a trapezophore on which dice are placed. Another straddles an amphora lying on the ground. Most are dressed in tunics. Their short, curly hair has been treated with a drill bit.
White marble.
Roman art, 3rd century.
Height: 42 cm. Length: 68 cm (visible cracks and old restorations).
Provenance :
- From a Carrara marble quarry owner in the 19th century.
- By descent, Ile de France castle.
