Description
[POLIAKOFF Serge] Set of two signed autograph letters concerning the plaques by Serge Poliakoff engraved by Jean Signovert, exchanged in 1982 between Mrs Marcel Poncet and Josie Barandon, Signovert’s widow. - Autograph signed letter from Marcel Poncet, dated 10 September 1982, on ‘La Rose des Vents’ letterhead, 2 handwritten pages. - A signed autograph letter from Josie Barrandon, dated in Paris, 22 October 1982, 1 handwritten page. Correspondence of documentary interest relating to the engraving plates produced by Jean Signovert for Serge Poliakoff. In her letter, Mrs Poncet refers to the dispatch of a book devoted to Poliakoff as well as the question of the future of the ‘Signovert plates’, specifying that some of them could be found amongst the engravings viewed and printed by Jean Signovert. She emphasises the importance of preserving this collection, recalling the attention paid by Alexis Poliakoff to his father’s work, and suggests that these plates might be entrusted to the sculptor Antoine Poncet to ensure their preservation, should Josie happen to find them. Josie Barrandon’s reply confirms that she had searched for these plates after the studio was cleared out and indicates that they were probably recovered whilst tidying up. An interesting collection for the history of Serge Poliakoff’s engraved work and for documenting Jean Signovert’s work as an engraver. Creases. Provenance: Jean SIGNOVERT’s studio collection.
