Painted in the mid-1630s, the present work is a fine example of the devotional garland paintings produced in Antwerp during the seventeenth century. The richly coloured wreath of flowers is attributed to Philips de Marlier, a Flemish still-life painter renowned for his flower pieces and garland paintings, frequently executed in collaboration with figure painters. The central oval depicting the Virgin and Child is based on an engraving by Raphael Sadeler (1561-1632) after Pieter de Witte, called Candido (1548-1628), reflecting the important role of graphic models in Antwerp artistic production.
We are grateful to Dr Fred G. Meijer, on the basis of a colour photograph, for his advice regarding the attribution of the floral garland and his assistance in the cataloguing of this lot.
