Farnese Hercules sculpture, Italy, 20th century Carved Carrara marble. Dimensions: height: 62 cm; base: 20 × 25 cm. A magnificent Carrara marble sculpture reproducing the celebrated Farnese Hercules, one of the most iconic images of classical sculpture and one of the most influential models of Antiquity. The composition is inspired by the monumental statue attributed to Glychon of Athens, created in the 3rd century AD as a copy of a bronze original by Lysippos, sculptor to Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC. The figure depicts the hero after completing one of his twelve labours, leaning on his club clad in the skin of the Nemean Lion, whilst concealing behind his back the apples from the Garden of the Hesperides, a symbol of his victory and the culmination of his exploits. Carved from Carrara marble, this work stands out for the superb quality of its carving, the vigorous anatomical rendering, and the meticulous modelling of the musculature, faithfully reproducing the monumental proportions and powerful presence of the celebrated original housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. From a private collection in Rome, it is an elegant interpretation of one of the great icons of Western sculpture, ideal for both collectors and classical interior design projects.
