Set of 11 traditional locks from the Bamana and Dogon peoples, Mali, 20th century Carved wood. Dimensions: 62 x 45 x 4 cm. This collection comprises eleven traditional locks from the Bamana and Dogon peoples, designed to serve both functional and symbolic purposes within the domestic and ritual spheres of West Africa. These pieces were used to protect granaries, dwellings or spaces of special significance, and their sculptural decoration often incorporated values associated with protection, fertility, authority and social status.
