Description
A pair of traditional Chinese ink and colour paintings on paper depicting a scholar and a buffalo
A pair of traditional ink and light-coloured paintings on paper, framed under glass. The composition depicts a seated scholar, dressed in a wide-striped robe, meditating or reading beside a kneeling buffalo, richly draped with a tapestry featuring polychrome hexagonal decoration. Chinese characters appear in the lower left-hand corner, alongside the artist’s inscription and signature, as well as several red seals, typical of the classical method of authentication and validation in scholarly painting. The overall colour scheme, in soft browns, greens and blacks, suggests art intended for contemplation, in which the man, the book and the animal embody the harmony between nature, knowledge and serenity. In good condition, with old traces of craquelure and surface wear; the paper is slightly wavy. China. Qing Dynasty. 18th–19th centuries. Lot held in an international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipment: no import duties apply within the EU. An export licence from the country of origin may be required.
