André Galland was an illustrator, poster artist and keen observer of his time. He trained at the Arts Décoratifs and then the Beaux-Arts in Paris, where his eye for storytelling and lively scenes was forged. His work, nourished by the spirit of press cartoons and graphic reportage, earned him official recognition, consecrated in particular by his appointment as a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1933.
Between the wars, he worked with the Henriot factory in Quimper, to which he brought a resolutely narrative and expressive language. His earthenware models are characterised by the liveliness of their lines, the spontaneity of their attitudes and a keen sense of human typology.
Galland created a world of Breton scenes, popular figures, children and genre characters, in which observation of everyday life was combined with a real sense of decorative composition. His creations, which were widely distributed, contributed to the revival of Quimper earthenware by introducing a graphic sensibility inherited from illustration.
His contribution to the Henriot manufacture bears witness to the fruitful encounter between the art of drawing and the decorative arts, in the service of a vision of Brittany that is both lively and stylised.
