This previously unpublished panel formed the left-hand panel of a triptych, a feature of which is often to
incorporate trompe l’oeil grey-scale sculptures when the panels were closed.
We propose that on the reverse side was the portrait of Charles de Saint-Radegonde, known as Charles Coguin, abbot
d’Anchin, by Bellegambe, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (INV 32.100.125), which is identical in shape and
dimensions to ours; it is therefore likely to be the reverse side of this panel.
Charles Sterling had drawn a parallel between the work at the Metropolitan Museum and the ‘Sainte Barbe’ in grisaille (
Christie’s auction of 24 June 2004, lot no., acquired by the Musée de la Chartreuse de Douai in 2011). The latter is of the same
proportions – the panel is the same width but slightly taller (87 cm) – as the top 20 cm or so of the panel had been
