Provenance: - Mr and Mrs Jean-Louis Quermonne The purchase of *La Cornue*, 1974, by Alexandre Calder (black-lacquered steel sheets, 7 x 8 x 3 m), was made possible thanks to Jean-Louis Quermonne (1927–2021), who was then president of the Université des Sciences Sociales (the predecessor of the Université Pierre Mendès France, now known as the Université Grenoble Alpes). In the early 1970s, there remained a fairly substantial sum of money from the campus as a whole. The university rector wished to use this sum to install a metal structure, but the university presidents met to express their disagreement and demonstrate that they were in charge of the campus. They challenged this decision with the support of Maurice Besset, the director of the Grenoble Museum. It was Besset who came up with the idea of approaching Calder, with whom he was friends. Eventually, Jean-Louis Quermonne and his wife visited Calder’s studio, where he proposed *La Cornue* to them. Calder then chose the location for the work on the campus, before providing the plans for *La Cornue* to the company Biémont, which, as with Calder’s other *Stables*, handled the cutting, assembly and installation of the work.
