Ink and gouache on silk mounted on cardboard, signed and dated in the bottom left-hand corner, countersigned on the reverse and titled: ‘Poetry’.
On the back of the board, there is a printed number: 1334
and on the frame, there is a number in pencil: V 2184.

In 1925, in Hanoi, Victor Tardieu and Nam Son founded the Indochinese School of Fine Arts (EBAI). This highly innovative school marked the birth of modern art in Vietnam, teaching both Western and Vietnamese art.
Vu Cao Dam, along with Le Phô and Mai-Thu, were the pioneers of this school and, upon graduating, they went on to practise their art in France in the early 1930s.
Vu Cao Dam favoured sculpture, on the advice of Victor Tardieu, but with the war, materials became scarce and he returned to painting.
He chose to work on silk glued to cardboard, like Le Phô and Mai-Thu.
Among the works from 1944, *La poésie* forms part of a series: *The Poet and His Muse*, of which only three other versions are recorded; one of similar dimensions was exhibited at the Cernuschi Museum in Paris (11 October 1924 – 4 May 1925).

and Vietnamese art. Vũ Cao Đàm, along with Lê Phổ and Mai Thứ, were the pioneering figures
of the school; after graduating, they moved to France in the early 1930s to pursue their
artistic careers. Initially, Vũ Cao Đàm focused on sculpture on the advice of Victor Tardieu,
but due to the scarcity of materials during the war, he turned to painting. Like
Lê Phổ and Mai Thứ, he chose to work with silk mounted on hardboard. Created in 1944, *La
poésie* is part of a series entitled *Le poète et sa muse* (The Poet and His Muse); only three other versions
are known to exist, one of which – of a similar size – was once exhibited
at the Cernuschi Museum in Paris (from 11 October 1924 to 4 May 1925).
