A wrought-iron casket known as the ‘Nuremberg casket’, with a painted decoration on the front depicting two standing figures, one of whom is haloed – possibly representing an Annunciation, with the Virgin Mary on the left and the Archangel Gabriel on the right; the other three sides feature foliage scrollwork. Corners and front panel feature reinforcing elements simulating columns; two removable handles on the sides, secured at the base by four-petalled flowers. Three reinforcing elements on the hinged lid, revealing the lock mechanism with engraved foliage motifs. Nuremberg work, 17th century. 7.5 x 17 x 8 cm. Included. A working key, dating from after the box was made. Heavy wear to the painted decoration.
