HERMES Paris. XXL (140) silk twill ‘Marcelina’ scarf: in shades of orange, pink, brown and black; with a white rolled edge. A geometric and kinetic composition inspired by Op Art, structured as a chequerboard of concentric arcs of a circle creating an optical illusion. Signed N. RICH-FERNANDEZ. 138x130cm. Label. In good overall condition. The interweaving of the circular motifs creates a hypnotic movement and a vibrant optical illusion. When folded, the circles overlap to produce a unique visual effect from every angle. The ‘Marcelina’ square was designed by the artist Natalie Rich-Fernandez for the Hermès Spring/Summer 2011 collection and reissued in 2013 in an XXL format. Inspired by Op Art (Optical Art): This artistic movement (pioneered by artists such as Victor Vasarely) relies on geometry, the repetition of patterns, pure colour contrast and optical illusions to create a sensation of movement or vibration on a flat surface. This is precisely the interplay of the chequered arcs in ‘Marcelina’.
