Description
GOGOTTE
On a black lacquered wooden plinth.
Total height: 40 cm. Width of the gogotte: 32 cm.
Quaternary ice ages, between 50,000 and 30,000 years ago.
Note
Gogottes are mineral formations originating from the sandy layer of Fontainebleau. Their mysterious shapes are the result of groundwater circulation, which cemented the sand.
Louis XIV was a great admirer of gogottes. André le Nôtre used them to decorate the edges of ponds and fountains at Versailles. They also inspired great artists such as Jean Arp, Henry Moore and Louise Bourgeois.
