With its innovative lines encasing a distinctive blue dial, the ‘Ellipse d’Or’ is undoubtedly one of the Maison’s most recognisable and groundbreaking Patek Philippe models. First released under reference 3548 in 1968, this watch features lines based on the golden ratio and a case with an innovative shape: the so-called ‘Ellipse’! Launched alongside reference 3546, the 3548 is the purest version aesthetically, thanks to its lack of lugs, and remains to this day the most iconic of the founding duo. It also introduced a provocative advertising campaign, notably featuring the famous ‘The $1,700 Trust Fund’ advert! This was unprecedented for Patek Philippe, which until then had favoured discretion and classicism to reassure its loyal clientele.
Our lot, as well as being one of the very first Ellipse references, features a bracelet crafted by Jean-Pierre Ecoffey, the leading Geneva jeweller specialising in the creation of Patek Philippe’s white gold bracelets during the second half of the 20th century.
