Description
[Binding]. CHATEAUBRIAND (François-René de), MARTINEZ COLOMER (Vicente, trans.). Vida del joven René. Valencia, printed by Ildefonso Monpié, 1827. Small 8vo, comprising 78 pages and one leaf of a bookshop catalogue. Bound in pine-green glazed calfskin, decorated with highly original gilding work executed using small dies, rollers and patterns of beaded or gilded fillets. It bears the initials J. G. (for Jacques Guignard) in the centre of the front cover. The endpapers are of pearl-grey tabis. The binding is unsigned but contains an envelope and card from the famous bookbinder addressed to Mr & Mrs Guignard, ‘with the warmest regards’, Emilio Brugalla. This is the second edition of this text, which was first published in Spanish in 1813. This attractive binding is slightly rubbed and has a small tear on the front cover. The spine is slightly sun-faded. Experts: Loup Axmann and Jean-Luc Boisseau
