Description
JOSSO (Camille Paul, ill.) & LUCRÈCE. *De Rerum natura*. Paris, C. P. Josso, 1950. Loose-leaf, with a re-bound cover, in the publisher’s slipcase and folder. An artist’s book in a limited edition of just 200 copies; this is one of the personalised copies printed especially for Jacques Guignand, bearing the artist’s EAS mark. An archivist, palaeographer and erudite humanist, Jacques Guignard (1912–1980) devoted his career to the National Library, where he headed the Printed Works Department before taking charge of the Arsenal Library from 1961 to 1980. Combining a profound knowledge of the history of the book with a rare artistic sensibility, he enriched and promoted the heritage collections whilst playing a pioneering role in the development of international bibliophilia. The text is illustrated with numerous original engravings by Camille Paul Josso (1902–1986). Slight marks on the slipcase, other minor imperfections. A specimen copy showing the first few pages, used to attract subscribers, is included. Experts: Loup Axmann and Jean-Luc Boisseau
