Description
[Classical literature]. Set of three limited-edition, numbered volumes, presented as loose-leaf pages in a padded cover, a folder and a slipcase:
- CHICHOTOT (Rosette, ill.) & THEOCRITUS. The Idylls. Paris, La Tradition, 1947. Limited edition of 492 numbered copies; this is one of the non-commercial, personalised copies printed especially for Jacques Guignard on Lana vellum and accompanied by a set of engravings. The text is illustrated with etchings by Rosette Chicotot. The slipcase is scuffed, with some foxing from the book bands and other minor flaws.
- EDELMANN (Jean, ill.) & VIRGILE. Églogues. Paris, Editions du Verger, 1948. Limited edition of 270 numbered copies; this is one of the copies reserved for collaborators, with an EAS from the illustrator to Jean Guignard. The text is illustrated with original lithographs by Jean Edelmann (1916–2008). Case worn.
- MAILLOL (Aristide) & VIRGIL. The Georgics. Rome, Edito-Service, n.d. Facsimile in a numbered but unjustified print run, with the series of woodcuts. Case slightly damaged.
An archivist, palaeographer and erudite humanist, Jacques Guignard (1912–1980) devoted his career to the National Library, where he headed the Printed Works Reserve before taking charge of the Arsenal Library from 1961 to 1980. Combining a profound knowledge of the history of the book with a rare artistic sensibility, he enriched and promoted the heritage collections whilst playing a pioneering role in the development of international bibliophilia.
