MAURICE DENIS (1870–1943) Travel Sketches from Italy 1921–1922 including a watercolour enhanced with gouache, signed by the artist Copy no. 135 of 175, with a watercolour enhanced with gouache by Maurice Denis, 34 colour engravings after Denis by Jacques Beltrand (including 4 full-page plates), foxing, browning and water stains; bound in green morocco leather with gold lettering, signed ‘Gruel’, richly decorated in the Art Deco style with geometric motifs, featuring in the centre a diamond shape radiating with dotted lines and a stepped linear design, green morocco linings decorated in the same style, cream moiré silk endpapers, gilt edges, a slight orange stain on the upper cover from the slipcase, slipcase and case in marbled paper, in-4 (300 x 220 mm), Paris, Jacques Beltrand, 1925. This copy is enhanced with a watercolour highlighted with gouache, signed ‘Maurice Denis’ (bottom right) and inscribed ‘Segeste’ (bottom left) 30.1 x 22 cm. One of 175 copies, this one accompanied by an original watercolour of Segeste by Maurice Denis and presented in a sumptuous gilded Art Deco binding signed by Gruel. The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by the research team of the Maurice Denis Catalogue Raisonné. Provenance Private collection, Brazil.
