ÉVARISTE JONCHÈRE (1892–1956), after Winner of the First Grand Prix de Rome for sculpture in 1925. Winner of the Indochina Prize in 1932. Director of the Indochinese School of Fine Arts in 1938. Young Vietnamese Woman or Torso of an Annamite Woman. Bronze with a beautiful brown patina, signed and numbered 2/8. Bears the foundry’s stamp ‘Landowski Fondeur 2004’ on the reverse. A posthumous edition produced under the supervision of the heirs. Height: 85 cm. According to Madame Jonchère’s recollections, the bust was created during the sculptor’s second stay in Indochina, in 1944. This was an exhilarating period for the artist, marked by creativity and intense activity. In addition to his teaching, Jonchère made it his mission to revive the traditional arts and organised exhibitions throughout Indochina. The original terracotta version of the bust was exhibited at the Salon in Hanoi at that time. In 1947, a version in reconstituted stone was exhibited at the Société des Artistes Français (under number 1446). The young Vietnamese woman who modelled for the sculpture was a friend of Jonchère’s first assistant. To persuade her to pose, the sculptor had to provide her with a dowry and pay her a salary. Jonchère, a leading figure in the ‘return to order’ within the classical movement of that period, created with this torso a free adaptation of the ancient model. The pose he chose, and his distinctive modelling style, in the tradition of Rodin, reveal the full sensuality of the model, celebrated as a feminine ideal.
