REIGN OF HIS MAJESTY EMPEROR MINH MẠNG (1820–1841) Scroll of an imperial decree, dated the 21st day of the seventh month of the second year of Emperor Minh Mạng’s reign (1822). On golden-yellow Dó paper from Annam, adorned with silver motifs depicting imperial dragons, phoenixes and symbols of longevity. Bearing the imperial seal ‘Sắc Mệnh Chi Bảo’ (敕命之寶). Dimensions: 50x130 cm. (A few creases and stains). The village of Đông Lỗ, in Toàn Động district, traditionally venerated the deity ‘Diêm La Trung Chính Đại Vương ’ (閻羅中正大王) (identified with Yama), reputed to have protected the kingdom and its people and to have been awarded honorary titles under previous dynasties. The imperial court conferred upon him the additional title of ‘Công Minh Chi Thần’ (公明之神) and authorised the continuation of his worship so that he might continue to protect the people.
