Description
Joseph INGUIMBERTY (1896–1971)
Professor of Decorative Arts at the Indochina School of Fine Arts.
Gathering under the trees.
Framed oil on canvas, signed lower left. c. 1930.

The theme of the ponds in the Tonkin Delta forms the backdrop to several paintings exhibited at the Galerie Charpentier, which the critic and geographer Pierre Gourou discussed in his article in *Le Monde colonial illustré* in January 1937.
The pools are like splashes of colour that shift with the mood of the sky, ranging from muddy brown to pale yellow – a setting serving as a pretext to highlight the models who posed for Inguimberty.
In his article, Pierre Gourou consistently emphasises the attention – indeed, the very love – with which the painter observes the people and things he chooses to depict.
It is this gentleness that continues to captivate us.
