“I dreamt of visiting Laos, the ‘Earthly Paradise’.”
Jean Bouchaud spent two months in Laos in January and February 1925.
During his stay, he focused above all on capturing human types and traditional gestures, particularly those of women – his favourite subject – such as the woman here styling her hair or leaning over the river to wash her clothes. The landscape is rarely the main subject but serves as a backdrop to the human activity which he captures so wonderfully well.
