Description
Alexandre TANSMAN (1897–1986). Signed autograph manuscript of the Symphonie Concertante for violin, viola, cello, piano and orchestra, [1931], in black ink, 99 folio-sized pages (approx. 30 x 40 cm).
Orchestral score, complete autograph conductor’s copy, dedicated ‘to Her Majesty Elisabeth, Queen of the Belgians’ and intended for publication by Max Eschig. Composed in 1931 according to the composer’s own statement, this major work, with its unusual instrumentation and occasional American-style touches, also known as the ‘3rd Symphony’, was premiered in ‘March 1932, the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, with the Belgian Keyboard Quartet’ (note in blue ink in Tansman’s own hand on the first page). The composer and pianist was, moreover, invited to accompany the Queen, who had taken violin lessons with Eugène Isaÿe. The score is structured as follows: I. Sinfonia (Allegro con anima, pp. 1–23); II. Tempo Americano (Allegro Molto, pp. 24–41, with the addition in blue ink ‘Tempo di Charleston’); III. Andante Pesante (Lento, pp. 41–56); IV. Finale (Allegro molto, pp. 57–99). The manuscript is dated at the end: ‘Paris – Formazza, March–April 1931’ (i.e. Val Formazza, Piedmont); it is written mainly in black ink on 28-line paper, it served as the score for the premiere in 1932 – and presumably as the model for the engraving in the Eschig edition – and contains numerous annotations in graphite, tempo and dynamics markings… and a few autograph additions in blue ink or pen. The first and last pages are discoloured with small tears, with no missing pages in the outer margins; there are traces of tape on the inner margins up to page 46 (2 to 3 centimetres discoloured or yellowed (due to the wide, yellow-tinted tape), as well as on the first and last pages) in the centre margin; no damage to the text (still legible, though occasionally slightly altered in the margins regarding the orchestral instrumentation, but not the notated music).
