Description
A rare double flageolet with its handwritten method book, dating from the last third of the 19th century, made of boxwood, with ivory rings and mouthpiece, and six brass keys mounted on a block. Stamped on the body: ‘J. STREKER [lyre] MULHOUSE’. Accompanied by its original handwritten method in German, entitled *Schule zur gründlichen und schnellen Erlernung des Doppelflageolets*, including a fingering chart. In a cardboard case. Length: 36.5 cm. Weight: 145g7 The output of Julius Streker, an instrument maker based in Mulhouse, remains extremely rare; only one other double flageolet of his making has been identified. The method preserved with this instrument appears to correspond to the one that William Waterhouse noted in 1999 as having been produced in ‘Mülhausen/Elsaß’ after 1870 and which had not previously been located (William Waterhouse, ‘The double flageolet – Made in England’, The Galpin Society Journal, vol. 52, April 1999). The discovery of this instrument by Streker and its instruction booklet is therefore of great historical and heritage interest, as it provides unique, tangible evidence of the work of this little-known instrument maker.
