PROVENANCE:
All the uniform items we are presenting come directly from a local family with a long history of cavalry officers dating back to the 18th century. However, this set cannot be attributed to a direct member of that family; it most certainly belongs to a relative by marriage.
We have therefore compiled a list, based on military records and archives, of the squadron leaders (commanders) of the 8th Hussar Regiment who were promoted to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. We have identified only three officers in this category, of whom only two were active during the period covered by the uniforms.
Robert-Charles-Louis-Marguerite Camusat de Riancey was born on 9 August 1861 into the Camusat de Riancey family. In 1896, he married Marie-Thérèse Jeanne de Villiers de La Noue (1874–1901). The couple had two daughters, Élisabeth and Marthe. He died in 1937.
He joined the 6th Hussars on 20 May 1882 as a second-class cavalryman. He was promoted to brigadier on 22 November, then to brigadier-fourrier. On 12 August 1883, he was appointed sergeant, then, on 1 October 1884, officer cadet. Three years later, on 1 October 1887, he continued his career as an officer.
Assigned to the 12th Hussars as a second lieutenant on 22 December 1888, he served as a non-commissioned officer at the Cavalry Training School in 1889. He was successively promoted to second lieutenant on 1 November 1891, first lieutenant on 7 January 1895, and then lieutenant first class on 1 October 1896.
On 12 July 1901, he was appointed captain in the 1st Chasseurs Regiment. On 12 July 1903, he was posted to the 2nd Cuirassier Regiment, and then, on 20 March 1904, to the 23rd Dragoon Regiment. On 24 June 1905, he rejoined the 2nd Cuirassier Regiment, and then, on 9 December of the same year, the 4th Hussar Regiment, seconded to Paris as aide-de-camp to the General commanding the 1st Cavalry Division.
He was appointed a Knight of the Order of the Legion of Honour by decree of 31 December 1907.
On 2 August 1914, Captain Camusat de Riancey was posted to the 8th Hussars.
He commanded the 7th Squadron of the 8th Hussars until the end of 1915.
On 1 January 1916, he was promoted to lieutenant-colonel, commanding half a regiment of the 8th Hussars, before taking command of the regiment.
In 1917, he was seconded to the 260th Infantry Regiment.
He was appointed an Officer of the Legion of Honour by decree dated 12 July 1917.
PROVENANCE:
This collection of uniforms comes from the de La Motte de La Motte Rouge family.
René de La Motte de La Motte Rouge (1829–1909), son of Armand-Marie de La Motte de La Motte Rouge (1795–1871) and Marie-Augustine Floyd, married Louise Marie Esmangart de Bournonville (1834–1918), daughter of Jean Esmangart de Bournonville and Antoinette de Cayrol. The wedding took place in Compiègne on 14 October 1861. The couple had, amongst others, a son, Henri de La Motte de La Motte Rouge (1862–1947).
The family connection between Robert-Charles-Louis-Marguerite Camusat and the de La Motte de La Motte Rouge family can be established through his wife’s family, Marie-Thérèse de Villiers de La Noue, and the Poulletier family, who were directly related to the Esmangart de Bournonville family.
Robert-Charles-Louis-Marguerite Camusat de Riancey (1861–1937) married Marie-Thérèse Jeanne de Villiers de La Noue (1874–1901) in 1896.
Indeed, Prudent-Léopold de Villiers de La Noue (1802–1855) married, in 1828, Élisabeth Jeanne Luce Poulletier de Suzenet (1808–1831), and the couple were connected to the Château d’Orrouy.
The Poulletier family, however, were related to the Esmangarts through the marriages of two cousins:
• Jean-Louis Esmangart de Bournonville (1770–1850) married Marie-Jeanne-Louise Poulletier. The wedding took place on 22 May 1796. He was the son of Louis François Esmangart de Bournonville and Gabrielle Le Duc.
• François de Sales Esmangart de Bournonville (1769–1851) married Joséphine Louise Poulletier in 1795. He was the son of Antoine Charles Esmangart de Bournonville and Françoise Angadrême Catherine Esmangart de Beauval.
