Description
Sarouk carpet (cotton warp and weft, wool pile), central Persia.
Circa 1900–1920.
(Numerous tears.)
Length: 196 cm; Width: 122 cm.
The carpet is adorned with a large navy blue hexagon decorated with the Herati motif. This motif consists of a rhombus formed of curved stems, enclosing a rosette and surmounted by a palmette at each vertex, repeated
endlessly, with four sickle-shaped leaves side by side in each instance. This design adorned Herat carpets (from which it takes its name). The Herati motif is set against an ivory hexagon featuring polychrome floral motifs. The entire composition is set against an ivory background with a polychrome floral design.
A navy blue border featuring garlands of stylised multicoloured flowers is framed by numerous counter-borders.
