Description
Denise and Peter ORLANDO Vase – Circa 1950–60 Free-form vase, broadly oval in shape Earthenware. Decorated with free-form motifs outlined by incised lines and enhanced with oxide pencil and oxide powders Signed on the reverse: ‘ORLANDO’ Height: 23.5 cm Free-form vase of overall ovoid shape, earthenware decorated with free-form motifs outlined by incised lines, enhanced with oxide pencil and oxide powders; signed  Height: 9.06 in. Denise (1921–2017) and Peter Orlando (1921–2009) formed one of the most original duos in French ceramics of the 1950s. Following Peter’s training at the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres, they opened their Parisian studio in 1952. Peter designed the forms whilst Denise created the decorations; together they produced earthenware pieces characterised by free-flowing lines, vibrant colours and abstract motifs inspired by modern art. Their creations, produced in small batches, blend design and craftsmanship with great freedom of composition. They exhibited regularly at the Salon des Ateliers d’Art de Paris, alongside ceramists such as Georges Jouve and Jacques Blin. Peter also exhibited his paintings at the Salon d’Automne in 1957, prior to his first solo exhibition at the Galerie Saint-Placide in 1958. Today, their works are housed at the Espace Orlando in Saint-Jean-Lespinasse, a venue dedicated to their artistic legacy. Denise and Peter ORLANDO
