“I’ve often found masculinity oppressive, and painting is a way of dealing with that. For me, these characters stand at the crossroads between identification, fear, desire and empathy. I think by painting them, I’m trying to paint myself within this system of power and come to terms with the fact that I don’t feel comfortable within it, usually by imagining that I’m subverting it.”
Alex Foxton
Alex Foxton’s paintings draw on traditional images of masculinity, deconstruct their archetypes and reveal their complexity and ambiguity. Alex Foxton explores the personal histories and humanity of the heroes and mythical figures that populate our Western culture, painting a new narrative beneath the surface of the story we all know. The figures depicted are elongated, torn between a calm face and an expressive, contorted or ecstatic body, emphasising the tension within each character. Alex Foxton seeks to shed the objective and dominant gaze that shapes these virile male figures in order to reveal an embodied vision and allow a desire for these bodies to flourish.

Alex Foxton explores the personal history and humanity of the heroes or mythical figures that inhabit our Western culture, painting a new narrative within the framework of the history known to all. The figures depicted are stretched, torn between a calm face and an expressive body—whether contorted or ecstatic—underlining the tension within each character.
