Description
Attributed to Raymond YARD, American work, 1930s Platinum 850‰ and white and yellow gold 750‰ "Rabbit jockey riding a horse-headed beer keg" brooch entirely paved with old and 8/8-cut diamonds and highlighted with black and blue enamel, the rabbit holding a carrot in cut coral under its arm, round faceted rubies in a closed setting for the eyes. Pins in 750‰ white gold. Dimensions: 2.9x3.4cm. P. Gross: 12g. (Minor chips to the enamel, two stones missing). Accompanied by a Raymond C. YARD case in red morocco gilded with small irons. Raymond Yard's reputation is largely associated with its series of animal and anthropomorphic brooches, combining high jewellery, humour and criticism of American society. The first "Rabbit" brooch was produced in 1928, depicting him in profile, standing, wearing a jacket and hat, carrying a walking stick and a bouquet of flowers. Then, from 1929 onwards, rabbits became the emblematic waiters, making a mockery of Prohibition in the United States. These pieces, rare on the market, are distinguished by their many variations, combining diamond pavé with calibrated stones (rubies, sapphires, emeralds) and coloured enamels. An example very similar to our rabbit jockey - dated 1931 - is featured in the landmark book on the history of the House of Yard: KUZMANOVIC N., Yard - The Life and Magnificent Jewelry of Raymond C. Yard, New York, The Vendome Press, 2007, pp. 10-11.
