Among these, Type IIa diamonds are distinguished by the absence of detectable nitrogen, an extremely rare characteristic that can give them remarkable transparency. Accounting for less than 2 per cent of natural diamonds, Type IIa diamonds are among the most sought-after stones. Several specimens featured in this sale belong to this category. This exceptional crystalline purity is reminiscent of some of the most famous diamonds in history, notably those from the ancient deposits of India. In the 17th century, Jean-Baptiste Tavernier travelled through these lands and described the fabulous stones he encountered in the markets and mines of the Sultanate of Golconda, then at the heart of the global diamond trade. Several of the most famous historical diamonds, such as the Koh-i-Noor and the Régent, are now identified as belonging to Type IIa. This historical legacy continues to contribute to the prestige and fascination surrounding this exceptional category of diamonds.
