Later that same year, a subtle combination of onyx and diamonds – typical of Art Deco jewellery – revealed the panther’s coat for the first time on one of the house’s watches. Thus began a true love affair between Cartier and the panther, the ultimate symbol of femininity. But it was with Jeanne Toussaint’s arrival as the house’s artistic director that the panther truly came into its own. A symbol of emancipation, the panther was depicted in three dimensions, then in its entirety throughout the 1930s; it was adorned with emeralds and diamonds, or took on a flexible, link-like form, mirroring the feline’s gait.
