Gross weight: 9.7 g. In 1954, Van Cleef & Arpels launched an innovative concept known as ‘La Boutique’. Aiming to attract a younger clientele, the House opened a boutique at its flagship location, 22 Place Vendôme, and presented more accessible pieces produced in limited editions. The creations are distinguished by meticulous goldwork (featuring textured and twisted finishes, amongst others) and the use of decorative stones (lapis lazuli, coral, onyx, chrysoprase, etc.). At the heart of these highly successful collections were the animal-themed brooches. Our squirrel is one of these iconic designs produced for Van Cleef & Arpels and ‘La Boutique’, showcasing the sense of humour imbued in these pieces of jewellery designed for everyday wear. Since the 1920s, the PERY & Fils workshop has been a key manufacturer for Van Cleef & Arpels, producing designs ranging from the ‘Zip’ to the ‘Passe-partout’, the ‘Pelouse’ and the ‘Ludo’. Among its creations, the animal-themed collections are particularly noteworthy, taking the form of a variety of lapel clip brooches (cats, dogs, rams, lions and even birds).
