Description
MARIO BUCCELLATI, 1960s ‘Leafy Branch’ brooch in 750‰ textured rose and grey gold set with two pear-shaped white cultured pearls and an old-cut diamond in a closed-set setting forming the pistil of a flower; the leaves are engraved using the ‘segrinato’ technique, and the branches are chiselled. Pin in 750‰ rose gold. Signed ‘M. BUCCELLATI’ on the tip. Made in Italy, hallmarks from the period 1944–1968 (Workshop 15 MI). Pearl dimensions: 8 x 6.2 mm and 10.02 x 6.4 mm. Diamond weight: approximately 0.35 carats. Dimensions: 3.3 x 2.3 cm. Gross weight: 6.9 g. (Diamond sparkle). Buccellati has built its reputation in particular on its mastery of jewellery craftsmanship and, more specifically, on its work in engraving and the texturing of precious metals. The ‘segrinato’ technique, in particular, is an engraving method developed by the House as early as the 1930s and 1940s. It involves using a chisel to engrave lines that intersect and overlap in different directions, giving the finished piece a velvety, silky appearance. It has been used in silverware and jewellery, particularly for naturalistic motifs.
