Description
VAN CLEEF & ARPELS, 1970s ‘Papillon’ necklace in 750‰ yellow gold with a chain link design; the textured wings are set with onyx plaques, whilst the body of the insect is centred with a brilliant-cut diamond. Spring clasp. Signed on a rectangular plate ‘VCA’, marked ‘© 75’ and numbered ‘B4040X136’. Made in France, with the JANCA workshop’s diamond-shaped hallmark. Adjustable length: 36.5–39–45 cm. Motif dimensions: 1.6 × 2.2 cm. Gross weight: 6.4 g. (Minor chips on the onyx). Particularly active in the 1970s for Van Cleef & Arpels, the JANCA workshop also produced jewellery pieces for Fred and Piaget. Its creations are distinguished by the use of decorative stones in a variety of colours, such as chrysoprase, tiger’s eye quartz, coral, onyx and turquoise, and by its work on the textures of metals. Animal motifs feature prominently in his designs. The iconic ‘Papillons’ from the Van Cleef & Arpels boutique were, in particular, crafted by the Janca workshop.
