Description
FROM THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD, 15TH CENTURY Pyxide (communion box) Oval in shape with a lid, entirely carved in bas-relief around its circumference, featuring Gothic pointed arches, with each archway housing a full-length figure dressed in Renaissance or medieval costume; clearly distinguishable are a knight in armour holding a lance, ladies-in-waiting in long gowns, a clergyman or scholar, and other elegantly dressed figures. Geometric friezes and interlacing patterns frame the main scene at the top and bottom. The lid is carved with a crowned head set within a border of interlacing patterns. Carved on the underside is a figure of a Queen with long hair. A work of great finesse in the tradition of medieval and Renaissance European ivory carvings. Dimensions: 6.5 x 8 x 4.5 cm Provenance: Acquired by Jean Eugène Guillaud in the 1970s.
